5 Ways to Prepare Your Furnace for Winter

It’s hard to think about winter being right around the corner as the 95-degree sun beats down on our backs. School hasn’t even started yet, why do you need to worry about your furnace? Before you know it, winter will be here and when it is, you will want your furnace to be up and running properly.

Before you switch your HVAC system from cool to heat, you’ll need to keep these 5 things in mind:

1) Turn on your thermostat

Sounds simple right? It is! Pick a day during the month of August or September and switch the HVAC to heat. Set the thermostat 3-5 degrees higher than room temperature and listen for the heat to turn on. If it doesn’t turn on, make sure all wirings are secure. If everything is secure and the heat is still not turning on, call a professional like the team at BluFlame to fix the problem before it’s too late.

2) Change your furnace filter

When was the last time you did it? Chances are, it’s been awhile. The average home without pets needs to change their furnace filter about every 90 days. If you have dogs or cats (or both), you will have to change the filter more often. With one animal, we suggest to change the filter about every 60 days and with more than one animal, about every 30-45 days. Changing your filters regularly will help keep the air in your home clean. Any family member with allergies will be especially appreciative of frequent changes!

3) Fill up on gas

If you have a gas furnace, contact your gas company to fill up your furnace. Gas is typically cheaper to buy in the summer which will help save you a few bucks too!

4) Clean the heat exchanger

The what? The heat exchanger! This part in your furnace is a set of tubes or coils that are wired and looped inside your furnace to heat the air. The heat exchanger needs to be cleaned out yearly by a professional.

5) Clean it out

Now is a good time to clear out any items you have stored around your furnace. The point of this is to avoid a fire in your home (we thought you’d like to know that). It’s also important to move anything that is sitting on or around your air ducts or vents to help the air flow process.
