Common Furnace Problems, Repair Time and Cost Estimate

On a blistering winter day, nothing is worse than a home or business without heat. Below we have identified some of the most common furnace problems, how long the repair may take, and how much it may cost to fix. Please note, depending on the furnace issue; the labor fee may not be included below.

Ignitors and Flame Sensors

When ignitors and flame sensors fail, they can short out the circuit board resulting in your entire system not working. Regular maintenance helps keep ignitors clean, but if too much time passes, clogged or dirty ignitors can lead to other costly repairs. If these are replaced during emergency service, it can cost upward of $300-$400. If they are caught and replaced during routine maintenance, it will likely cost half that. Typical replacement takes 1-2 hours.

Thermostat

Nine times out of ten, when there is no heat, you should check your thermostat. Typically a battery replacement will solve the issue, but if you need to replace your thermostat fully it can cost as little as $20 for a basic model and upward of $200 for automated thermostat options. Replacement typically takes 1 hour.

Circuit Boards

When one of your circuit boards stops working, the whole furnace will shut down. Due to the complexity of replacement and to ensure your furnace is fixed correctly, calling a professional repair technician is your best option. Replacement can cost $400-$650 and can take up to 2 hours.

Furnace Motors

When your furnace motor breaks down, it is not a quick and easy fix. In addition to cost, it takes time for your repair technician to order the correct replacement. Draft inducer motors are manufacturer specific in which a technician may not have the appropriate replacement at the time of repair. They can cost between $450 to $700 to replace. Other the contrary, since blow motors are not manufacturer specific, they tend to be more readily available and can cost between $400 and $1,500 depending on size and horsepower needed. Replacement can take 1-2 hours depending on the complexity of the repair.
